BC Conservatives Propose “Rustad Rebate” for Renters & Homeowners

The BC Conservatives, led by John Rustad, have announced a new plan to offer a provincial tax write-off of up to a whopping $3,000/month for rent or mortgage interest payments.

The rebate starts at $1,500/month and increases to $3,000/month over time – potentially allowing residents to reduce their taxable income by up to $36,000/year.

This type of program has been seen in the US , where mortgage interest deductions and renters’ tax credits are widely available. Could this be a solution for BC’s housing crisis?
