He claims will help protect renters from being taken advantage of by their landlords. 💥
He wants to nationalize lease agreements and create a law requiring landlords disclose the rental rate history to potential tenants. Trudeau claims that this will be really helpful for renters to negotiate their new rent with their landlords. 💼📜
He also wants to put $15,000,000 in a legal fund for tenants to be able to use to sue their landlords for reno-victions and landlord abuse. 💰⚖️
Additionally he wants to have a tenant’s rent payments count towards your credit score. 💳💰
So there’s definitely a lot to unpack here.
First off – Disclosing the rental history of the home to the new tenant doesn’t really affect what a landlord is going to charge. Rent is set by the market and giving a tenant arbitrary rental rates throughout history in a market where rent has obviously and sadly sky rocketed isn’t really going to be a surprise. Is the tenant supposed to put that previous rent info on a graph going back in time to see if the rates look fair compared to today? This information is nearly useless and if anything you’d want to equip tenants with recent comparables, not the history of the rents over time. I unfortunately can’t see this helping tenants much if at all. 📉🤷♂️
Secondly – $15,000,000 to a fund to help tenants sue abusive landlords? Possibly a good thing but can you really trust Trudeau’s gov’t to actually administer the cases effectively, let alone fairly without widespread abuse and corruption? I’d be shocked if they could do either.
Lastly – I absolutely believe that paying rent should count toward someone’s credit score. If someone is consistently paying their rent on time they should definitely be rewarded in their credit rating and I think most fair minded people would agree. I think as long as you punish those who don’t pay on time with the same credit hit, I think fair is fair.
