7 future highrises near Langley skytrain raises eyebrows.

Real Talk with Corbin | December 5, 2023 | written by Corbin Chivers

๐Ÿ”ด๐Ÿข If you thought TRAFFIC in Langley was bad now… ๐Ÿ˜…๐Ÿ˜…๐Ÿ˜… ๐Ÿš—๐Ÿš•๐Ÿš“
๐Ÿ”ธJust wait until there are SEVEN Towers ๐Ÿข๐Ÿข๐Ÿข๐Ÿข๐Ÿข๐Ÿข๐Ÿข
& 2500 New Residents all packed into the new “Willowbrook Station” ( labelled a “Transit Oriented Development Area”)…or at least that’s one of the many new proposals the city might have to approve if the Provincialย @bcndpย gets their way.

๐Ÿ”ดWhat exactly is being proposed?
The proposal mentioned in this article is one of many that are being proposed to the city (and many other cities) right on the heels of the BC NDP’s big announcement on wide sweeping zoning changes.

๐Ÿ”ธThe changes are some of the most drastic and heavy-handed policies the provincial government has ever proposed. This new set of policies would fundamentally shift power from the municipal government and concentrates them in the provincial gov’t to a degree we haven’t yet seen. Whether you are a supporter or critic of the policy, that much undeniable.

๐Ÿ”ธEssentially the BC NDP Gov’t decided that they would rule by decree and veto any previously held bylaws by cities that would limit this. A change to Urban planning as we know it at the city level.

๐Ÿ”ธThe BC NDP Gov’t and their supporters of the policies say these new policies, while drastic, are necessary. They claim that this is the only way to address the the housing shortage and that they know better than the municipalities do.

๐Ÿ”ธMany critics of the policies including myself feel that while we need to absolutely address the housing crisis, (and immediately!) this approach is too heavy-handed. What the government fails to realize is that by trying to force immediate zoning changes to this sort of densification they cause more harm than good. While there is no doubt a need to increase densification in many areas, the “force” approach will lead to many areas increasing density before the infrastructure is there to adequately support the larger population. For example is there a school in Langley that isn’t bursting at the seams with Portables and overcrowded classrooms.. ALREADY?

๐Ÿ”ดI’ll leave my take in the comments below and would love to hear your opinions too ๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿ‘‡โ—โ—โ—
